NADJ South West Meeting, Monday 4 April 2011, 8pm

The Balmoral Hotel, Weston-Super-Mare

Aim: Network and learn from other DJ’s, develop business, promote the industry

Introductions & Apologies:

Attendees = 20, Guest Speakers = 1, Guest Photographer = 1
Apologies from: Andy Martin, Nigel Knight, Graham Watts

Guest Speaker:  Dave Reed – “Build yourself a successful mobile DJ business”

  • Learn how to make your business successful and earn income, not just a commodity.
  • Successful DJ businesses have money and build assets.
  • You need to find out what the customers wants before you can provide an accurate quote.
  • Quote using the Pleasure – Pain theory
  • If you believe you are worth a certain amount of money – you will be perceived as worth that. If you set yourself limits, you will not exceed them.
  • Focus on perceived value.
  • Consider who your target market is – who are you serving? How will you reach them?
  • Copywriting – change your writing style so it becomes 80% you (the customer) and 20% us.
  • People actually buy what they want and then justify the spend later.
  • Create the dream – with memories and imagination. Not technical details.
  • Visit www.discobusiness.com for more info – not live yet, will let us know when it is
  • Dave also runs RSD music – sell sound and lighting gear

Roger thanked Dave for an informative presentation and Nick for organising it.

Opinions Regarding Content:

Roger asked if everyone is happy with the content of the meetings. Agreed at present we are. It is not always possible to source content as informative as tonight but if anyone has any suggestions they should bring them up.

NADJ South West:

We are now officially NADJ SW, a section of NADJ UK. This means we have a larger support network and access to funding. It should not change the nature of the meetings. Now we have been accredited by the NADJ we have a small budget to push things forward.

Next month, if nobody comes up with a different name, which the majority agree on, we shall be called NADJ South West and this title will be used in all future marketing of the event. It gives us a small budget to market the group.

NADJ members and Non-members are STILL all welcome to attend the meetings – there is no pressure to become a NADJ member.

If you have a different suggestion, it needs to be put forward to Roger or Nick before the next meeting – not AT the meeting, BEFORE the next meeting.

Marketing Budget:

Membership for NADJ cover PLI. We can only advertise as NADJ SW if we all chip in somehow. You have the next month to think about whether you are willing to, whether you want to and how you would like to progress any promotional work as a group. Suggestions to Nick before the next meeting.

Video Clips

Clips were shown to emphasise the point – pleasure / pain – what do you want from your disco.
It was suggested we could mock up a similar video for the group to use as ‘what you don’t want at your wedding’. Simon has a studio which we could use.

Wedding Fayres

Points raised about Wedding fairs where the venue already have resident DJs which they enforce on their wedding customers. Note to check before you attend, if they are sending all of their customers to their resident DJ – you may not get as much work as you had anticipated. Some venues have started charging an ‘opt-out’ fee if you want to bring in your own disco or DJ. Various places to check, Rookery Manor, and the Grand Pier were mentioned.

For Sale This Month

LEDs for sale £150, contact Nick Burrett.

Cummins Photography

Came back this month on request. Only 1 person took up the opportunity. Please respond to emails so we can gauge interest in certain things and not waste anyone’s time. Charlene is available to come to various locations for photos – self contained studio. Contact for details.

Next Meeting:

Next month Marketing will be discussed in more detail. Meeting will be held on Monday 9th May, 7.30pm for an 8pm start, at The King Sedgemoor Inn, Express Park, Bridgwater.

Please inform Nick or Roger in advance if you can or cannot attend. A lot of time and effort goes into these meetings behind the scenes and apologies for not attending are encouraged.

Simon thanked Nick and Roger for their work – round of applause.

Any other business

Gigs Available

Steve Burley knows of a Christmas residency at Beachlands Hotel, Weston. Toby from Riverside Recordings is interested. Details exchanged.

Kit List Suggestion

Andy suggested we should make a ‘kit list’ regionally, as a back up. If your equipment breaks, you need something out of hours, you can refer to this list to see who you could contact to hire something from short term.

Availability Lists

Suggested we have an availability list – same as the lists the Welsh branch have.

RSD Trip

Pete Lock would like to organise a trip to RSD. Will run if we have the interest. Let him know as soon as possible so a minibus can be arranged if necessary.
